Based on your selections of storage items (and optionally your input of custom items) this complimentary storage space estimator will recommend the smallest storage unit size that may meet your needs. It will also provide a list of recommended moving and packing supplies, all of which are available at Sierra's moving supply store. Finally, this Estimator will calculate several storage statistics (volume, item count, etc) that you may find useful in selecting a rental truck or hiring a moving service.
The estimator assumes that all items can be stacked floor to ceiling and that packing is at a very high density. If you are storing items that you'll need to access frequently (important papers, outdoor equipment, etc.) you may want to leave an aisle in your unit packing that would increase your space requirements. Our staff can assist you in making these decisions. Just give us a call!
We do hope that you'll find our Estimator helpful! Please feel free to send us your comments and suggestions.

Some tips on using this estimator; We've 'de-rated' our storage unit volumes to about 80% of their theoretical limits to try to take into account real-world conditions. If you won't be packing to this near professional level you may want to consider going to the next larger storage unit over what the Estimator recommends. We are expanding the Estimator's library of items but there will always be special items you'll want to store. The Estimator addresses this with the 'Add New Item?' button. Answer the prompts for the item name, dimensions, etc and it will appear in the list of items you want to store. Any number of new items can be added, though they must have unique names. The Estimator will accept whole numbers (for example: 2) and decimal numbers (for example: 0.5). This can be useful if your furniture is a bit larger or smaller than assumed in the Estimator. This version of the Estimator accepts only positive numbers. Negative and non-numbers (letters, symbols, etc.) will be ignored by the Estimator. The Estimator assumes that any item can be rotated vertically to be stored. It also assumes that items can be stacked on top of each other to the ceiling of the unit. Some larger items, like a piano, may not fit in all of our unit sizes. The Estimator will check the dimensions of all your items to assure that they will fit in the unit recommended for you. Some other items, like boxes of books, are often too heavy to stack more than a few boxes high or to stack on some other items (like a table!). Feel free to discuss these considerations with our staff when making your unit selection.

So how does this estimator work? Behind what you see in your browser is code that defines the dimensions for each item you see displayed in the table. After entering the quantity of each item you'll be storing the code calculates the volume for each item, multiplies it by the quantity you entered and adds all these calculated volumes to get a grand total. The estimator displays the grand total volume of all items in cubic feet. Once the grand total is calculated, the code compares this to the storage capacity of our storage units, starting with the smallest, most economical sizes first. When it finds a unit size that has more capacity than your items require, it then compares the unit dimensions to the dimensions of the items you've selected to be sure they'll fit. Once this criteria is met, the Estimator displays this unit size in a pop-up box. In most cases, item dimensions are from typical dimensions published by suppliers and manufacturers. Your items may vary somewhat from what we researched, but the total volume will be a reasonable estimate of your storage needs.
